The Wilderness should not be treated like a playground,
nor should it be treated like a museum.
My name is Jake and I'm the lead instructor here
at SOWMAS. Actually, I'm the only instructor. I
wasn't born in a hollowed out log. I wasn't trained
from an early age to live off of the land. I don't
live in a yurt. I'm not a "survivalist" or a
"doomsday prepper." I'm just a regular guy that
loves the outdoors, teaching, and helping people.
SOWMAS was born out of frustration more than
anything. You see, I'm a Paramedic by trade and
that means that I need to obtain a lot of
education just to make sure that my Paramedic license doesn't lapse. I was tired of sitting through the
same classes year after year and wanted to do something new. Unfortunately, what I wanted didn't
seem to exist. So, I set out to create my own training program. After many years of development,
traveling around the country learning from others, and just plain crawling around in the woods, that
program is finally ready.
The courses at SOWMAS are unique in that they combine both certification level training in wilderness
medicine and wilderness survival skills. The classes are generally held outdoors with a strong focus
placed on the hands-on application of what you are learning. We use techniques like injury simulation,
live action scenarios, and immersion to create a learning environment that will help you to feel more
confident in your ability to respond to an emergency in the wilderness.
